ISO 9001:2015 and HP Multi Jet Fusion: Why ISO Matters

Tempus 3D is now ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System certified. If you're sourcing parts as a design engineer or supplier quality engineer, the interesting question isn't the certificate, it's what changed on the shop floor to earn it. Below is the process-level version: what ISO 9001:2015 actually constrains in an HP Multi Jet Fusion production environment, and why it matters once you move a part from prototype to a controlled bill of materials.

The certificate maps to process control, not marketing

ISO 9001:2015 is a quality management system (QMS) standard. It doesn't certify a part, it certifies that the organization producing it runs a documented, audited system for repeatable output: defined work instructions, calibrated equipment, controlled records, and a closed-loop corrective action process. For an MJF bureau specifically, that system has to reach into the variables that actually drive part-to-part variation, not just the paperwork around them.

A traceability chain that survives a field failure

If a part underperforms eighteen months after delivery, the question is whether the trail actually exists: build ID, material lot, machine, operator, post-processing step, and inspection record, all linked. Under a certified QMS, that chain is a query, not an investigation. Non-conformances get logged and root-caused through a formal CAPA process, corrective action plus verification that the fix worked instead of a quiet reprint that leaves the underlying cause unaddressed.

This is where ISO 9001 stops being nice-to-have. It's effectively a prerequisite for medical and orthotic work (adjacent to ISO 13485 documentation expectations), for aerospace and defense supply chains (adjacent to AS9100 traceability requirements), and for any program where your customer's own audits will trace back through their suppliers.

ISO 9001 helps clears the supplier qualification gate

For OEMs, prime contractors, hospital systems, and government buyers, a QMS certification is frequently a binary gate in vendor approval, no certification, no PO, regardless of part quality. With ISO 9001 in place, a Certificate of Conformance can be issued per lot, and the qualification conversation moves straight to lead time and price instead of stalling on a custom audit.

Dimensional control you can actually reference

Critical dimensions get sampled against drawing tolerances, CMM or FARO arm, depending on geometry with First Article Inspection records on new part numbers and control charts (Cpk) tracking drift across repeat builds.

Paired with the HP MJF platform

As an HP certified partner, the machine-level process, agent formulation, jetting calibration, fusing energy, already runs to HP's specification. ISO 9001 is the layer above that: it governs everything the hardware doesn't, from incoming material control to final inspection to how we respond when something drifts. Validated hardware without a controlled process around it still produces inconsistent parts. This is the piece that closes that gap.

What doesn't change

Turnaround and pricing are unchanged. You still get an instant online quote and a real engineer on the phone for a second opinion on a design. Certification isn't a reason to slow down, it's the documentation that the speed is repeatable.

Bottom line

You shouldn't have to take a supplier's word for process control you should be able to point to an independently audited system, on a standard the supplier doesn't get to write itself. For prototyping, that changes little day to day. For a part moving into a production BOM, or a new vendor going through qualification, it's the difference between a claim and a record.
